The Dino Experience !

The Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience bills themselves as a venue for of all ages and gives the opportunity to experience science-focused interactive displays, full-scale dinosaur fossil casts, hands-on exhibits with real dinosaur fossils, skinned animatronic dinosaur exhibits, along with guided tours.

The 775-square-foot paleontological laboratory is run by the Garden Park Paleontological Society, a local non-profit organization, which uses the facility to prepare recently unearthed fossils from Colorado’s fabled Garden Park Fossil Area, and from many other fossil projects from around the country for public display.

Their indoor interactive center is geared towards (ages 3-12) and features games, multi-media stations, and age-appropriate content that serve to educate and entertain tomorrow’s scientists.

They also have a state-of-the-art, Dolby-enhanced theater and with a rotating selection of dinosaur-related films. It features a ten-foot screen for a fun, family orientated, multi-media element. There's a ’ Dig that's filled with a non-stick variety of pea gravel and the faux bones of a T-Rex for pint-sized archeologists to unearth.

You may continue learning as you stroll through history’s wild side with a visit to the dinosaur park's "Dinosaur Wild Walk" . Here, visitors will find a smooth, compacted-dirt trail that meanders through a high-plain desert forest that’s home to 16 different life-sized, skinned, animatronic dinosaurs, some of which will track your movements, and which are sure to surprise and excite.

The 24-foot-tall (7-meter-tall) T-Rex, which moved and made sounds, was one of 16 dinosaurs that line the park's Wild Walk exhibit. Zach Reynolds, co-owner, says the T-Rex at the Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience smoldered for about 10 minutes before it caught fire Thursday morning

Zack thinks an electrical malfunction caused a life-size animatronic Tyrannosaurus Rex to burst into flames.

Visitors watched as the inferno spread through the dinosaur, which appeared at times to be breathing flames.

Reynolds joked, "We knew he had a temper, but today he blew his top." A total loss he hopes to have a replacement T-Rex installed by the summer.

We were out and did the narrow gauge Durango & Silverton Train ride. Not knowing the place existed or it was deliberately HIDDEN from me because someone didn't want me digging for the bons in the kids exhibit! We ate at home and our socializing is curtailed for the duration.

Great dinosaur story, Bret. Fantastic pics. That storm that is hitting you now is the same one that went through here Wed nite nad Thur. It was just forming here on the eastern slopes of the Rockies, so wasn't too severe. The weather dudes warned that it would gain in ferocity as it moved eastward. I hope you survive it without any problems.

I'll have surgery next month to hopefully "fix" a back injury from some years ago. We've been just under freezing here with blowing and drifting snow.... JD says it looks like a foot or more possibly. With warming temps it will probably be gone in a few days.
